At Big Dog Wraps we love motorcycles and the freedom they provide. But, we always encourage you to drive safely and responsibly!
Today we would like to reinforce the importance of always riding with your helmet on. It is the best way to avoid fatal accidents when riding your bike.
Now, choosing the correct helmet for you is just as important as choosing the correct size of underwear. It has to be a perfect fit! Here are some tips for you to consider before buying a helmet for your motorcycle.
A Helmet for Your Head
Choosing the correct helmet for your head is the most important factor to consider, it is not only going to protect you, but it has to be comfortable, otherwise, your journey will become annoying.
The Right Size
First of all, you need to measure your head. Your helmet must fit correctly. If it is too small, then it will obviously be uncomfortable, but if it is too big, then it won’t provide the proper protection and could come off in the event of an accident.
Use a tape measure or a piece of string to measure around your head, from just above your eyebrows to the thickest point in the back. Write down the measurement in centimeters – this will be your normal helmet size.
The Right Fit
Helmets come in different shapes and everyone’s head is different, therefore, you need to determine your head shape. We are all generally egg-shaped, falling somewhere between round and oval.
A helmet that is the wrong shape will cause pressure points on your forehead (too round) or the sides of your head (too oval). Pressure points can turn from annoyance to an ugly headache after riding a few miles.
There should be no gaps at the temples or cheeks. Gaps at the temple may mean this helmet is the wrong shape for your head. If a smaller size doesn’t fit either, try another model or brand of helmet.
Make sure that there is no movement in the helmet’s fit – hold the helmet securely with one hand on each side and try to rotate it from side to side. Your cheeks should move with the helmet as you move it. If the helmet moves without moving your cheeks, it is too big or the wrong shape.
With the helmet securely fastened, grab the back of the helmet and try to roll it over your head and off. Even though it might sound severe, helmets that are too large can actually come off this way and will surely come off in an accident.
Many helmets have replaceable cheek pads and liners that will allow for adjustment of the interior shape and fit of the helmet. Remember proper protection should not be uncomfortable.
Finally try it on, for at least 20 to 45 minutes that way you can be sure how good or bad it fits you.
